AC/DC ConverterHow to use
In Ricoh Electronic Devices company, we can offer the R1700 with an appropriate topology and components to use as an AC/DC converter with PFC circuit.
PFC stands for Power Factor Correction, or power factor improved circuit.
Generally, AC/DC converter converts from a commercial supply to DC supply by the rectification with a diode bridge and smoothing by a capacitor. Since the capacitor is used for smoothing circuit, a phase difference between AC voltage and current is generated, and the current waveform may be distorted and its shape does not look like a normal sine wave. As a result, invalid power increases and power factor becomes worse.
By using a PFC, the phase of the input current can be adjusted as same as the phase of the input voltage, and the waveform becomes close to a sine wave. Then the power factor is improved and the harmonic current can be suppressed.
Whether or not the power factor improvement is necessary depends on the regulation standard of each application.
For example, as for the input power is 75W or more Class D or 25W or more Class C lighting applications, the harmonic wave regulation is specified by the international standard, IEC61000-3-2, therefore a PFC is necessary.
